Sleep Training - Night 6

Naps: Only 2 naps yesterday & both times I accidentally made a noise that woke her! Oops!! I felt bad & tried giving her a 3rd nap at 3pm but she wasn't tired...so 2.5 hours of naps yesterday.

Routine: Probably due to the lack of daytime sleep, Abby got cranky around 7:15pm. So we scooted upstairs & did our routine, and she was asleep by 7:35. Didn't even need the pacifier.
Sleep & Night Wakings: So we have begun noticing a pattern. The sleep training book suggests we get rid of the pacifier to help her sleep. So we've been removing it. Well, night 5 I didn't feel like dealing with it. She was sleeping great & I didn't want to mess with the paci removal. The result? She slept the best she has since we started sleep training. Then, last night she was so tired, she went to bed without the paci. But then, she woke up 35 minutes later. I nursed her, rocked her, removed the paci...10 minutes later she woke up again! So that time, I just left her with the pacifier...she slept a little over 2 hours. Hmm...interesting. Could be a coincidence, but I kind of think not. From the very beginning Abigail has had a very serious need to suck. When I nursed her for the very first time in the hospital, she nursed for 1.5 hours! I'm just sayin...I think the pacifier, in our case, might actually be helping her sleep more than hindering it. I didn't try removing the pacifier anymore last night, and she slept great! Well...everything is relative. She woke up 6 times, but went right back to sleep each time & slept from 1:00-5:00am, which she hasn't done in a long time. Usually she wakes every 30 minutes to an hour starting at 3am.

The positives:
  • She slept for longer stretches last night. Once I stopped trying to take her pacifier away, she slept for 2 hours, another 2 hours, then 4 hours.
  • She seems to be used to going back to sleep on her own. She can self soothe herself back to sleep sometimes, which is so much better than what things were a week ago.
  • Since she's doing a good job of going back to sleep in her crib now, we're going to move on to Phase 2 of sleep training. I belive this is where we go in, but do not pick her up. Which we've mostly been doing so far...and we might try to let her soothe herself back to sleep a little more. I'm also going to stop nursing her past midnight! Eeks! Wish me luck on that one!
Numbers:
Total hours of nap time: 2 hours 35 minutes
Total hours of night sleep: 9 hours 20 minutes
Grand total sleep: ~12 hours - hopefully she'll nap better at daycare today. My bad on doing the dishes while she was napping! Oops!!
